Passive systems, in contrast to active systems, allow rock movement to occur but focus on preventing rockfall from reaching roads, railways, working areas, and other areas being protected.  Protection is done by retaining, controlling, and catching rockfall events.  Passive systems are often the most cost-effective solution as some rockfall source areas are not accessible.
